I’ve decided to completely remove Window 7 and to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on it. 14.04.1 to be precise.
Out of the box not all was correctly working, I have experienced 3 issues, two of them have been solved, I’ll show you how.
ISSUE 1 – the two finger scrolling touch pad is not working
This ASUS has a wonderful touch pad, very big.
Out of the box it works only to point, while the scrolling even do not appear as check box to be enabled in “mouse”.
I think this is due missing drivers and I have solved it updating the Kernel.
I did the update to 3.15.6 and the touch pad magically starts to work perfectly.
How to update kernel (64bit)
cd /tmp<br /> wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.15.6-utopic/linux-headers-3.15.6-031506_3.15.6-031506.201407172034_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
After the installation you need to restart.
More info on kernel update and 32bit instruction can be found here.
ISSUE 2 – many Fn keys not working
One of the first things I have noticed is that some Fn+Fx was not working.
Here is the list
Fn+F2 (wireless toggle)
Fn+F5 (decrease brightness)
Fn+F6 (increase brightness)
while Fn+F7 (turn off brightness) and above did.
I have solved the issue updating GRUB. I find out several possible solutions googleing around but only one worked. You can find it here.
Open terminal and do:
gksu gedit /etc/default/grubnow look for this
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"and change it with this
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi="save and restart.
Your Fn keys should now work.
ISSUE 3 – fingerprint reader not working
To configure fingerprint I have installed fingerprint gui.
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:fingerprint/fingerprint-gui
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libbsapi policykit-1-fingerprint-gui fingerprint-gui
The software itself seems to work but my Ubuntu does not see my fingerprint reader even if it’s listed by
lsusb… no solution still available for this.
I’ve tried to add myself in root usergroup owning the reader but with no success.
I’ll try again in next days ad I’ll update the post in case of solution.
Fingerprint reader is not exactly something I can’t live without…
I’ve changed permission to 666 to the fingerprint but still not visible.
After installing kernel 3.17.1 the behavior is the same: Touch pad OK, Fn keys OK and fingerprint still not visible.
